I have to admit that I was quite hesitant to see this film at the Brussels International Film Festival. The title didn’t sound very cheerful, and the brief plot summary revealed almost nothing about the movie except for its perverted premise. All I had heard beforehand was: “Imagine your best friend calls to say that he’s in the same room as a famous actress, and she isn’t saying no to some action between the sheets. The only problem: your friend works at the morgue, and the actress has recently deceased!” It’s an intriguing idea, but I wondered where the film would go from there. I hoped it wouldn’t be a 76-minute movie showing three guys committing necrophilia! Or would they get caught, turning the story into a courtroom drama? Or worse, would the actress emerge as a zombie, alternately raping and butchering her three assailants? Despite my reservations, I decided to purchase a ticket for “The Corpse of Anna Fritz.” I didn’t regret it. I won’t reveal what eventually happens (although many other reviewers have), but writer Isaac P. Creus and director Hèctor Hernández Vicens made the most of it. “The Corpse of Anna Fritz” is a suspenseful and absorbing thriller with unpredictable twists and notably frightening moments. One thing you shouldn’t expect, however, is gratuitous or repulsive footage. The necrophilia theme is controversial, but the nudity and explicit sequences are kept to a minimum. The film delves into how far people are willing to go to protect themselves, including betrayal and murder, resulting in some brutal yet realistic scenes. With a limited number of set pieces and a small cast, “The Corpse of Anna Fritz” relies on strong acting performances and the surefooted direction of Hèctor Hernández Vicens. It’s a simple yet effective shocker that makes you wonder how you would react in such a situation. Hopefully, differently than the characters in the film!
